NATIONAL SKI PATROL OUTDOOR EMERGENCY CARE PROGRAM ( OEC )
OEC TODAY
The field of emergency medicine is ever changing. As a result, the OEC curriculum has improved to meet the needs of ski patrollers and other outdoor emergency care professionals. Today, the OEC curriculum is the primary curriculum taught to ski patrollers at nearly every ski area in the United States, as well as to ski patrollers in Canada, Europe,Asia, and the Middle East. It also is used by others who may have need to provide emergency care in an outdoor setting, such as mountain guides and river guides, bike patrollers, law enforcement personnel, and various government agency personnel. The OEC curriculum contains applicable baseline knowledge and skills identified in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s ( DOT ) Emergency Medical Technician ( EMT ) National Standard Curriculum necessary for the non-urban environment. The training of OEC Technicians has been accepted and utilized by ski areas and in other outdoor environments throughout the country as the level of training of individuals who respond to accidents and deliver essential emergency care in the non-urban environment. In addition, the information and skills contained in the OEC curriculum exceed the knowledge and skill level identified in the U.S.DOT’s Education Standards for Emergency Medical Responder ( EMR) training.
An OEC Challenge will be held in May and is open to OFA III etc.
NOTE – Once you have successfully completed the Challenge you only have to attend a yearly refreshers ( our annual training weekend ) to retain your OEC certification.
